Sashiko is a traditional Japanese embroidery technique, with its distinctive appearance of white-on-blue stitching. The word “sashiko” literally means “little stabs”. Using running stitches for the decorative and/or functional reinforcement of cloth and clothing, sashiko dates back to the Edo period (1603–1867).

Today Sashiko is used in any number of products from clothing, bags, accessories, and home linen, like cushions, rugs, blankets, bedspreads, or wall art. In these more waste-conscious times, sashiko is becoming more popular, embodying the quintessential culture of mottanai, the Japanese Philosophy of not having to waste anything.

Join Tamara in this 3 hour class to learn the principles to start your own sashiko sampler, so you can confidently start using this traditional Japanese mending technique in your future projects.
