Portland sheep is an ancient English breed, originating from the Isle of Portland (Dorset, UK). During the 17th century it was very popular due to its multipurpose qualities, as it produces good meat, milk, and wool. In the 1970s, it was on the verge of extinction with fewer than 100 animals. The breed is now more widespread, with over 1,500 animals in more than 100 different flocks. The breed is protected to preserve its unique genetics. What makes the Portland breed so special? Its purebred as it had not been influenced by modern meat or wool production criteria, but rather remains true to its original forms, purposes, and values.
Its wool ranges from 25 to 30 microns, a strong yarn that changes considerably when blocked, becoming softer. It doesn't have great heat retention
It is great for everyday garments . Ideal for between seasons or mild winters.
