Pressing curved hems? Here's another totally unique and original sewing tool fom Jenerates.
The Flex hemmer will curve in either direction, and even both at once - think shirt tails. You can use the holes to mark your position with a chalk or iron-off pen:-
- in the cm version they're are positioned 1cm and 2cm from either edge, and the hemmer is 3cm wide,
But more importantly pin through the holes to keep the hemmer in place while you're pressing. You can use a felt mat or you can just pin into your ironing board.
You can use the FLEX hemmer on a straight edge too. Add just a wee bit of tension to it when you pin it to inhibit the curve.
Another useful tip, the silicone hemmers can be used on the curve of a tailor's ham and won't push your hem out of place.
The Jenerates FLEX can form a pretty extreme curve, as shown in the photos. When you're pressing a concave up curve, like a neckline, you might want to snip into the edge of your fabric to release some tension. If you're pressing an extreme concave down curve (like a frown and not a smile) then if you're using a heavy fabric you'll usually get a better result if you put a gathering stitch in the hem allowance to pull the fabric evenly into the curve.
The FLEX is heat resistant to 230°C, won't buckle with steam, and doesn't get burning hot when you use it. It's been carefully designed to maximise both functionality and product strength. The weight of the silicone is enough to give you a firm edge to press against, but not so thick that it creates a shelf in the hem. The FLEX can take a fair bit of abuse - in tests it was stretched it to almost double its original length with no damage, but please don't try that at home! If you stretch it enough it will eventually snap, like an elastic band. When not in use please store it flat or loosely folded.
