Hiraeth is a special word in Gaelic, a kind of longing, nostalgia for a home or situation that once was or never was.

Ryeland sheep were raised by Herefordshire clergymen on a diet of rye, hence its name. Seven centuries ago the Flocks were a symbol of prosperity and wealth for monks and friars throughout England.

The population is fairly stable in England, but in Australia there are efforts to protect it more as it is considered one of the nine "founding" breeds of the continent

Ryeland wool is 24-28 microns, creating a yarn that is very easy to work with and fairly rustic. Depending on the project blocking is not always necessary . The yarn retains heat  Hiraeth, being a single-ply yarn, is ideal for garments, it's perfectly fine to wear directly on the skin, and most sensitive skin types tolerate it well.
